John R. Political interpretations Copyright status. Adaptations and other derivative works. Seriously, a lot of the things the movie has to say are worthy of consideration.
Musings on the nature of the divine, the burden that is immortality, and how easy it is for the noble to become the ignoble are all there, among other things.
It's how these things are presented that sometimes makes it hard for the movie to be taken seriously.
If you can get over Sean Connery's wardrobe and other instances of sheer silliness being paraded about, this is really a good movie.
Even if you can't get over it, at least try to enjoy the results of what must have been some serious trippin' on the parts of the filmmakers.
Sean Connery in a red leather thong, and later a wedding dress! At this moment, this is my favorite science fiction film of all time.
I first saw it over a year ago and have thought about it consistently ever since and I feel compelled to share it with as many people as possible.
In my opinion this is one of the most unique and creative science fiction plots ever. If I could give this 6 stars, I would.
See all reviews from the United States. Top international reviews. This is by far one of the most strange films I have ever seen I'd seen it a few years ago and haven't really given it another thought since Two main reasons I decided to upgrade from my crap American DVD were because I love the Arrow editions of these more obscure films with nice new artwork.
And the second reason is because I am life long fan of Sean Connery. So, on a rainy afternoon I thought I would watch Zardoz again Zardoz is interesting, Connery does a half descent job running around topless and sporting red leather budgie smugglers.
However that's about as good as it gets. It's meant to be sent in the year but it all look's like a mediaeval town and primitive.
Perhaps that was the point? Or more likely it was made in , and not a lot was done to make it look much different.
The film is weird for the sake of it which I suspect will be described as art! I don't believe a word of that snobbery! It's bloody awful with mostly unonvincing acting from all, makes hardly any sense and it's just a trippy mess.
The is far too much emphasis on erections and all the woman in the future seem to refuse to wear a bra! I've not seen so many pairs of jugs in one sitting since the Razzle days!
As a package, the Zardoz Blu-ray is good with nice packaging and does go well with a film collection. But as a movie it's just pretentious nonsense.
Great material for a Nic Cage remake which I think could work. Zardoz is so bizarre and odd that it did nothing to derail Connery who went on to make some fantastic post Bond 70s films after this tosh, most notably The Man Who Would Be King.
By far one of the films of that decade and Connery's and Michael Caine's career. Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote.
Please try again. This film has not stood the test of time. Aside from the stilted cliched 70s acting, the sets, costumes and screenplay can only be viewed through a time telescope to make sense.
Only the film's premise of a future where the idle rich have separated themselves from the rest of humanity and become an apathetic bunch of nhilists holds any water.
Facing the eternal ennui of immortality they set about destroying themselves just for the fun of it. Sean Connery puts in his usual solid performance, which raises it above the dreck but the rest of the cast wander about spouting bizzarre dialog in a completely muddled plot.
I got the impression it was written by someone who had been living in a hippy commune for a couple of years and became so disallusioned and pot addled they just wanted to kill everyone.
A wish fulfilled in the movie oops, spoiler alert. A bit like the sixties, you had to be there to understand it.
The gun is good! Why do I like this movie so much! Could it be because of the choir singing Beethovens 7th Symphony, large talking stone heads, psychotic men wearing nappies shooting everything in sight, I don't know, but I love this totally bonkers movie.
When you've watched this you know you've had an experience! Connery at his post bond best and Rampling is to die for.
A well crafted world but a little self indulgent at times, meanders but makes sense in the end. A true original. No studio would have the nerve to make something as out there as this nowadays!
Looks great too on this new Blu-ray. Load more international reviews. Great package nice booklet , great special features, great Bluray transfer.
Always loved this cult film! For years now, every big hard drive I had on any of my computers, I named - Zardoz.
I must recommend that all people watch this!! Follow this film all the way through for a really memorable, clever film.
Amazing ideas jostle with astonishing production design and beautiful photography. The thing to remember as you watch it - all the technology was designed for long-distance space flight.
Now it'll almost all make perfect sense! I have only gotten around to watching this movie till quite recently and I was in for a nice surprise and a treat.
I think I have visited a lot of the locations in the movie. An under rated sci-fi that has an unusual twist on an apocalyptic future world.
Sean Connery in a sci fi film. A unique, unusual, interestingly complex film about the problems of immortality set in the year AD.
You might need to watch it a 2nd time to get a deeper fuller understanding of it. A good film to watch. Recommended by my partner we bought this to add to my increasing collection of odd ball cult films I can see why it bombed at the box office, a very strange and indulgent film by the director Boorman, odd casting and budget special effects.
John Alderton in a very strange role I would recommend a purchase and viewing, it's baffling but cosy too, the reference to the Wizard of Oz being predictable Must say after watching it on copious amounts of Vodka it got better than when sober!
Not a film to watch with your mother in law!

He established a standard that can now never be ignored, and the stimulating shock-waves from his explosion will carry far into the future When the film was released, it was immediately met with terrible reviews.
Along with the scathing reviews, the public reacted very poorly to the confusing world of Zardoz. According to a Starlog Magazine article on Zardoz "these reviewers and the general public failed to understand many of Boorman's analogies and philosophical statements".
Multiple moviegoers reported that "when dissatisfied patrons from the previous showing exited the lobby, they would encourage those waiting to leave.
Many times they did. The film was later shown on local TV stations as late-night movie fare. After being released it was not available to purchase on VHS, or any other format until Zardoz was not released on Blu-Ray until April 14th Its consensus reads, " Zardoz is ambitious and epic in scope, but its philosophical musings are rendered ineffective by its supreme weirdness and rickety execution.
In a New York Times article, film critic Nora Sayre wrote ""Zardoz," which opened yesterday at the Trans-Lux East, is science-fiction that rarely succeeds in fulfilling its ambitious promises Despite its pseudo-scientific gimcracks and a plethora of didactic dialogue, "Zardoz" is more confusing than exciting even with a frenetic, shoot-em-up climax.
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave it two-and-a-half stars out of four and called it a "genuinely quirky movie, a trip into a future that seems ruled by perpetually stoned set decorators… The movie is an exercise in self-indulgence if often an interesting one by Boorman, who more or less had carte blanche to do a personal project after his immensely successful Deliverance.
Jay Cocks of Time called the film "visually bounteous", with "bright intervals of self-deprecatory humor that lighten the occasional pomposity of the material.
It is a film which buffs and would-be filmmakers are likely to be examining with interest for years to come. A fascinating reminder of what cinematic science fiction used to be like before Star Wars, this risible hodge-podge of literary allusions, highbrow porn, sci-fi staples, half baked intellectualism and a real desire to do something revelatory misses the mark by a hundred miles but has elements — its badness being one of them — that make it strangely compelling.
Decades later, Channel 4 called it "Boorman's finest film" and a "wonderfully eccentric and visually exciting sci-fi quest" that "deserves reappraisal".
Recently the Chicago Reader called it "John Boorman's most underrated film—an impossibly ambitious and pretentious but also highly inventive, provocative, and visually striking SF adventure with metaphysical trimmings.
